Kogi Assembly Calls On Govt To Complete Abandoned Oguma/Sheria Bridge

Kogi State House of Assembly on Wednesday called on the state government to complete the abandoned Oguma/Sheria bridge in Bassa local government area of the state.

The calls followed a motion moved by the member representing Bassa state constituency, Rayi Daniya on a matter of urgent public importance during plenary session held on Wednesday.

According to him , the bridge played and important roles as it connects five wards namely Akuba one, Akakana/Ayede, Ozongulo, Ikende and Ozugbe all in Bassa LGA.

He said that the communities have now been cut off as the collapsed bridge was a palliative measure to ameliorate the sufferings of the residents.

The lawmaker explained that it took the quick intervention of some spirited individuals to save the life of a motorcyclist, who was drowning when the Oguma/Sheria Wooden Bridge collapsed last Saturday.

He there fore called for urgent attention by the government to save the life of his constituents.

Daniya said the current situation of the bridge has brought untold hardship on the people as Sheria market, which is one of the largest markets in Kogi East, is no longer accessible.

He appealed to the state government to compel the contractor handling the bridge to return to site immediately as the project was awarded five years ago.

He also urged the house to direct the house committee on works to carry out an on-the-spot assessment of the bridge.

Contributing to the motion, the deputy chief whip, Paul Enema, who described the situation as unfortunate, appealed to the state government to urgently provide palliative to reduce the sufferings of the people.

The speaker, Prince Matthew Kolawole who sympathized with the people of Bassa local government on the incident, said the resolution of the house will be forwarded to government for quick action.
