The Kogi State House of Assembly Committee on Emergency has described the appointment of Hon. Mouktar Atimah the Executive Secretary, Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) as a round peg in a round hole.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Suleiman Abdulrazak stated this when the Committee visited the agency to perform an oversight function.
He expressed gratitude to the State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo for appointing Hon. Mouktar Atimah, whom he described as an accomplished and reliable ally.
According to him, the purpose of the visit was to identify areas of challenges and collaborate with the Agency as part of the oversight function of the House Committee.
He further stressed that the responsibility of the Agency on emergency management is tasking , noting that through collaborative partnership with the House Committee on Emergency, the Agency would achieve its mandate.
He reiterated that Kogi State House of Assembly has been following the activities of SEMA especially sensitization campaign programmes on 2024 flood predicted by NIMET.
“This proactive steps taken so far by the Agency has stimulated House Committee on Emergency to extend its operations, possibly through legislative advocacy. This partnership aims to enhance disaster management and mitigate the impacts of disasters on the citizens” he said.
In his remarks, the SEMA Executive Secretary Alhaji Atimah commended the Committee for the visit and described it as timely and appropriate step, stressing the need for legislative support to scale up disaster management in Kogi State.
He emphasized that His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, placed zero tolerance to any forms of disaster.
He commended his commitment and support, noting that Governor Ododo has charged SEMA through the office of Deputy Governor to manage every disaster occurrence with minimal impact on the citizens.
The SEMA Boss thanked the House Committee on Emergency for the visit and promised enhanced collaborative partnership toward achieving the mandate of the agency.
