As part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, the Nigerian Navy has extended its goodwill beyond maritime duties, reaching out to vulnerable members of society with a humanitarian visit to the Ministry of Mercy Orphanage Home in Lokoja, Kogi State.
Leading the delegation, the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Lugard, Commodore Adesola Ojo, said the outreach underscores the Navy’s enduring commitment to compassion, community service, and nation-building.
He explained that while the Navy’s seven-decade history is rooted in safeguarding Nigeria’s waters, it is equally defined by its responsibility to support and uplift communities, particularly the most vulnerable.
Commodore Ojo noted that the visit was aimed at showing love and solidarity with the children, describing them as symbols of hope and the nation’s future.
“Today’s visit goes beyond ceremony; it reflects our shared humanity, compassion, and duty to care for one another. These children embody the promise of tomorrow, and it is our collective responsibility to nurture and protect them,” he said.
The Commander further emphasized that under the leadership of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, the Navy continues to strengthen civil-military relations alongside its core mandate of maritime security.
He added that initiatives such as the orphanage visit demonstrate the Service’s broader role in fostering unity and goodwill across the country.
Addressing the children, he reassured them of the Navy’s support, stressing that they are valued and their dreams remain important to the nation.
Commodore Ojo also commended the orphanage’s management and caregivers for their dedication, noting that their selfless service plays a vital role in shaping the future of the children and contributing to national development.
The visit featured interactions with the children and the presentation of relief items, forming part of activities lined up to commemorate the Navy’s 70th anniversary.
In his response, a representative of the orphanage, Mr. Samson Aliyu, expressed gratitude to NNS Lugard for the gesture, describing it as timely and impactful.
He called on other individuals and organizations to emulate the Navy’s example, noting that increased support would help meet the growing needs of the children.
Aliyu disclosed that the home, established in 1992 in Dekina Local Government Area before expanding to Lokoja, currently caters for over 75 children, in addition to adults under its care.
