The Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) has called on the Kogi State Government to established the Ministry of Livestock Development in order to harness the potentials abound in the sector.
Dr Omotugba Tolu the Kogi State Chairman of the association made the call at a press conference held in Lokoja on Wednesday.
According to him, research conducted in the state last year by the association indicated clearly that there are over one million cattles in Kogi State, stressing the need for the State Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo to leverage the newly created Ministry of Livestock Development by President Ahmed Tinubu led administration to replicate the Ministry in the State.
Dr Tolu who explained the economic importance of the Ministry to the State , urged the Governor to appoint a qualified Veterinary Doctor as the Commissioner for effective management of the Ministry.
“Our research proved to us that there are over 1,000,000 cattles scattered all over Kogi State. If the Ministry of Livestock is being created the state government stand a better chance of generating enormous revenue, create jobs for the youth and also put an end to incessant herders/farmers crisis.
“Therefore, we are advocating for the establishment of a similar Ministry in Kogi State and the appointment of a credible Veterinarian as its Commissioner” he stated.
While expressing gratitude to Governor Ahmed Ododo Usman over his approval and prompt implementation of the 2021 reviewed Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) for the members of the association within the Kogi State Civil Service, Dr Tolu appealed to the Governor to give a speedy approval for the two months arrears of the CONMESS to Veterinary Doctors in the State.
“This gesture underscores His Excellency’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of Kogi State workers and his recognition of the pivotal role the Veterinary profession plays in the economic prosperity of the State.
“This approval has motivated us to carry out our duties with renewed enthusiasm and the highest level of dedication” he explained.
