The Kogi State Ministry of Health in collaboration with Sightsavers, have trained over 1,400 Frontline workers in a major push to eliminate Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in the state.
The Kogi State Acting NTD Coordinator, Mr Musa Momohjimoh, who spoke to journalists after the week-long training on Friday in Lokoja, said it was conducted in communities at local government level making it easy for participation.
According to him, participants include: 72 health workers, 1,200 teachers and 200 Community Drug Distributors (CDDs) across Ibaji, Lokoja, and Kogi Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
He noted that the capacity-building initiative was designed to support the upcoming Mass Administration of Medicines (MAM) campaign for schistosomiasis in 24 wards within these LGAs, targeting 152,724 children aged five to 14 years.
He explained that the training provided participants with comprehensive knowledge on Schistosomiasis—its causes, signs and symptoms, and preventive measures.
“Special emphasis was placed on the correct administration of praziquantel, the medicine used for schistosomiasis control, such as guidance on dosage and management of possible side effects.
“In addition, participants were trained on the use of standardized reporting tools to ensure accurate documentation of treatments during the campaign.
“This approach will improve accountability and enhance monitoring of drug distribution at the community level,” Momohjimoh said.
He noted that the Kogi Ministry of Health in collaboration with Sightsavers had earlier on November 4th and 5th, held a planning meeting to strategise for the MAM exercise.
He emphasised that the meeting’s key objectives included examining logistics gaps, mapping distribution route and reviewing accountability mechanisms for the exercise.
The Programme Officer for Sightsavers, Mrs Phoebe Hindan, emphasised the importance of the training towards ensuring a wider coverage and successful MAM exercise.
“Aside supporting with the ongoing Mass Administration of Medicines for the prevention of Schistosomiasis, these trainings are key part of capacity building efforts.
“These are vital to Sightsavers capacity building for improved healthcare delivery in the state,” she said.
With this capacity-building effort, Kogi State is reinforcing its commitment to reducing the burden of NTDs and improving public health outcomes,” she said.
The MAM exercise will run from November 17 to 28, 2025, in Ibaji, Kogi and Lokoja LGAs, aims to protect thousands of children from the debilitating effects of schistosomiasis.
