The reconstructed Auchi College in Edo State was officially commissioned on Monday, marking a significant turnaround for an institution that had suffered years of neglect and infrastructural decay.
Once described by stakeholders as having deteriorated into a “cassava farm,” the college has now been transformed through the intervention of the Association of Great Achievers, Class of 1991, led by oil and gas entrepreneur, Mr. Peter Omoh Dunia, popularly known as Peter Black.
The commissioning ceremony, held on April 6, 2026, drew dignitaries, alumni, and community members from across the country, all gathered to witness what many described as the rebirth of a once-great citadel of learning.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Dunia said the initiative was driven by the poor condition of the school and the desire to give back to an institution that shaped their lives.
He described the project as deeply personal, recalling his journey as a young student at the college alongside his twin brother.
“This is not just a ceremonial event for me, it is a deeply personal moment,” he said. “This school gave me more than education; it gave me discipline and a foundation for life. What we have done here is a token of our gratitude.”
He noted that while government has a critical role in development, partnerships with private individuals and alumni groups are essential in addressing challenges in key sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
“What we are commissioning today is not just a structure of cement and blocks, but a symbol of gratitude and a commitment to future generations,” Dunia added.
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who performed the commissioning, commended the Class of 1991 for their vision and generosity, describing the project as a model for community-driven development.
“This project represents more than the rebuilding of structures; it is the restoration of hope and a bold investment in the future of our children. Government cannot do it alone. Sustainable development requires collective responsibility” the governor said.
He urged other alumni associations and well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the initiative, stressing the importance of collaboration in advancing education in the state.
The Principal of the college, Mrs. Adam Obetaru-Jato, expressed joy over the transformation, noting that the facelift would significantly improve teaching and learning conditions.
Former Edo State Governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, and the traditional ruler of Auchi, HRM Alhaji Aliru H. Momoh, Ikelebe III, the Otaru of Auchi Kingdom, also praised the alumni for restoring the institution’s lost glory.
The colourful ceremony featured goodwill messages from various stakeholders, many of whom lauded the Association of Great Achievers, Class of 1991, for what they described as a timely intervention that has brought the school back to life.
With the reconstruction completed, attention has now shifted to maintaining the facilities and ensuring that the renewed infrastructure translates into improved academic performance and discipline among students.
