The Kogi State Government has renewed its commitment to preserving cultural heritage, promoting girl-child education, and strengthening unity among diverse communities across the state.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo made this known on Saturday at the grand finale of the 2026 Ovia Osese Cultural Festival in Ogori, Ogori-Magongo Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Represented by his deputy, Joel Salifu, the governor described the festival as more than a celebration, noting that Ovia Osese embodies the history, identity, and values of the Ogori people.
He added that it also serves as a platform for education, tourism, and economic development.
Ododo stressed the importance of educating and empowering the girl-child, pointing out that Ogori has become a model community with increasing school enrolment among girls.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting girls through targeted education and empowerment initiatives.
He commended the organisers, particularly the President of the Ogori Descendants Union (ODU), Dr. Gabriel Osiwomequin Aiso, for making this year’s edition larger and more impactful, assuring continued government support for the festival.
Earlier, Dr. Aiso urged the people to remain deeply connected to their cultural roots, describing the Ovia Osese Festival as one of the most treasured institutions of the Ogori community.
He said the theme, “Living the Legacy: A Rich Celebration of Tradition and Identity,” reflects the enduring values, history, and identity of the people.
Dr. Aiso warned that any society that loses touch with its heritage risks losing its essence, citing an African proverb: “A river that forgets its source will soon run dry.”
He emphasised the need to preserve traditions, tell indigenous stories, and define cultural identity, noting that the festival provides a platform for celebrating the community’s rich heritage.
Describing Ogori as a community founded on discipline, respect for tradition, communal responsibility, and a strong commitment to progress, he said these values remain essential in guiding future generations.
He noted that despite its relatively small population, the community has produced outstanding individuals who have excelled in the military, public service, governance, and leadership at both national and international levels.
Dr. Aiso also highlighted Ogori’s strong academic reputation, describing it as one of Nigeria’s most intellectually distinguished communities, with a high number of professors and scholars.
According to him, these achievements underscore the importance of sustaining a culture of education, excellence, and hard work.
He urged the younger generation to embrace their heritage and uphold the values handed down by their forebears, stressing that the future of the community depends on preserving its identity while striving for continued progress.
