Professor Salihu Danlami Musa of department of Geography and Environmental Studies , Federal University Lokoja on Wednesday said,
Geography played a pivotal role in building resilience and fostering adaptation towards sustainability by providing essential insights into the spatial dimensions of environmental change.
Professor Musa stated this while presenting the 19th inaugural lecture series of the institution with the theme: “Geography and Sustainability: Unraveling the Myths, Reality, and Practicality” held at Adankolo campus of the university in Lokoja, Kogi State.
According to him , the application of Geography addresses socio-economic vulnerabilities and complex interactions between human societies and natural systems.
He said Geography helped in comprehending the diverse environmental processes and hazards, such as climate change, natural disasters, and ecosystem degradation that pose risks to human communities.
The university Don added that Geography played a crucial role in ensuring sustainability through equity and justice by providing insights into the distribution of resources, environmental vulnerabilities, and socio-economic disparities across different regions.
Professor Musa a renowned research in the field of Geography and Environmental studies however , called on education policy makers to reintroduce Geography as a subject for both primary and secondary schools in the country.
According to him, the removal of Geography from the Primary school academic curriculum has made the subject unpopular among pupils and students of basic education.
“We are now raising geographically ignorant children, citizens who lack the basic knowledge of our culture and environment and can not interact sustainably with the environment” he stated
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, said that the inaugural lectures series serve as a platform for professors of the university to share their research, insights, and contributions with the wider academic community and the public.
He noted that the inaugural lecturer’s work has not only advanced our understanding of geography and environmental studies but has also inspired countless students and colleagues.
The VC expressed appreciation to the family, friends and colleagues of Professor Musa for their immense contributions and commitment to the inaugural lecturer’s successes in life.
